The School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs has information on completing your degree and thesis defences.
Approximately 6 weeks before your planned MSc defence you should confer with your supervisor to come up with a list of potential examiners. Your supervisor is expected to contact potential examiners to confirm their willingness to participate.
The MSc Defence Committee must be approved by the Research Program Director and is chosen for the expertise of its members and ability to examine the student. All committee members are suggested and invited by your supervisor(s) except for the Department Head (or delegate) who will also act as the Chair and who will be arranged by the Graduate Assistant.
Once confirmed, and a minimum of at least 4 weeks prior to the MSc defence, their names should then be submitted to the Graduate Program Office, with the following additional pieces of information:
-
Thesis title
-
Dates/times for the defence agreed upon by the invited committee members, supervisor(s), and student.
-
Brief, specific expertise of the proposed examiners
-
The Supervisor may communicate with the Research Program Director to confirm procedures that will be followed.
Students are responsible for distributing copies to the examining committee (one for each supervisor, one for the Department Head, one for the internal examiner, one for the external examiner and one for the Chair).
The following forms must be signed and returned to the Graduate Assistant when submitting the thesis;
NOTE: A PDF copy of the thesis must be submitted to the School of Graduate Studies (thesis@queensu.ca) following the same deadlines outlined in the reference material.
Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that the correct formatting has been used in the thesis.
