MORTALITY DUE TO CANCER TREATMENT DELAY
Presented by: Dr. Tim Hanna

Dr. Hanna will be speaking about the impact of cancer treatment delay on mortality. Dr. Hanna led a systematic review and meta-analysis on this topic, along with Dr. Will King and Dr. Ajay Aggarwal, recently published in the BMJ. The topic has a received lot of attention given health care delays associated with COVID-19 control measures.
Learning objectives - at the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
- Appreciate the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment of cancer
- Describe strengths and limitations of studies on treatment delay
- Consider approaches to maximize health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic
Dr. Tim Hanna is a clinician scientist at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research. He is based in the Queen’s Cancer Research Institute (QCRI) Division of Cancer Care and Epidemiology (CCE), where his research focuses on three translational streams of health services research: quality of care, access to care and health technology assessment.

WELL-BEING OF MILITARY PERSONNEL IN TRANSITION TO POST-MILITARY LIFE: CONCEPTS AND MEASUREMENT

"Well-being" is a common public policy objective and an important focus for policies and services supporting Canadian Armed Forces military personnel as they transition to post-military life. This seminar describes the superordinate, composite type of well-being concept exemplified by the Veterans Affairs Canada well-being framework and reviews principles for measuring well-being in multiple areas of life. Jim’s partners for this seminar are Drs. David Pedlar (Queens University/Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research), Dawne Vogt (US Veterans Affairs), and Jason Busse and Andrea Darzi (both at McMaster University and the Chronic Pain Centre of Excellence for Canadian Veterans).
Learning objectives - at the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
- View well-being concepts from multiple perspectives.
- Describe a superordinate, composite concept for “well-being”.
- Apply principles for measuring multidimensional well-being.
- Consider applications in the context of supporting military personnel during their transitions to post-military service.
Dr. Jim Thompson is Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Public Health Sciences at Queen’s University, Research Medical Consultant to the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Dalhousie University. His primary research focus is Veterans’ well-being, particularly in transition to post-military life. From 2005-2019, he served the research medical advisor at Veterans Affairs Canada. Jim has over 100 scientific publications.
